Coronavirus cases at Bristol University have soared by 870 per cent in 16 days

Coronavirus cases have soared by 870 per cent at Bristol University in just 16 days.

The latest data show 1,152 students and 25 members of staff have now been diagnosed with the virus.

That figure has increased by 66 people over the past 24 hours, and by 1,054 since the university first started publishing their numbers on October 7.

Over the past nine days, Covid cases have not surpassed 100. This week's biggest jumps include today's 66 and Tuesday's 85.

This means infection rates are slowing down - between October 7 to 14 numbers were above 100 every day.

This compares to cases among staff members which has seen a sharp rise. The overall total has more than doubled since last Wednesday, when eight coronavirus cases were confirmed.

There has been 25 colleagues who have now tested positive, which is a daily rise of three, and takes this week's increase to 15.
