Coronavirus cases and deaths continues to creep up in Bristol

One more coronavirus-related death has been confirmed in Bristol this weekend.

It's been almost three weeks since the last person died in any of our city's hospitals after contracting Covid-19, with the most recent confirmed hospital death happening on June 26.

But sadly on Saturday, July 11 a person died at the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) trust after contracting coronavirus. The trust runs both the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital and sadly 152 of its coronavirus patients have died during the pandemic.

North Bristol Trust, which runs Southmead Hospital, has recorded 119 patient deaths since the start of the pandemic, the most recent of which was on June 22.

Nationally, 44,798 deaths have been recorded following a daily rise of 148.

Coronavirus cases

One further case was confirmed in Bristol on Saturday..

NHS England's latest data show 1,290 patients have now tested positive for the virus.

North Somerset also reported an increase of three, bringing the district's total to 912.

South Gloucestershire's cases remain at 743 and Bath and North East Somerset's are static at 336.

Nationally, 288,953 Covid-19 patients have been recorded following a daily rise of 820.

Bristol's R rate

The R rate in the South West may have risen above one.

R – the measure of how many new people are infected by each coronavirus case – has reached 0.7 to 1.1 in the region, according to Government figures released on July 10.

If the R number is above one, it means an outbreak can grow exponentially.

Last week's Government figures estimated R in the South West to be between 0.7 and one.

Last week it was between minus seven per cent and plus two per cent - it is now between minus six per cent and plus one per cent.
