Coronavirus case tests positive in South Australia days after leaving hotel quarantine

A man has tested positive for COVID-19 three days after he left quarantine in South Australia — but health authorities say he is "not considered infectious" and his case is of low risk to the public.

The man aged in his 20s recently underwent two weeks of hotel quarantine after returning from overseas, but was released during the week.

During his fortnight of quarantine, he repeatedly returned negative test results.

But his day 17 test revealed what SA Health described as a "weak positive result" and he has now been directed to self-isolate at home as his case is further investigated.

"While the source of the case is currently deemed as under investigation, it is highly likely to be historical, given this weak positive result and the results of other tests," SA Health said.

SA Health said that the man was "not considered infectious" and was confident that the man's case was "not of concern".

It is believed the man contracted the virus overseas, and was in the process of shedding it when he returned the positive result.

The man is the only new COVID-19 case in South Australia on Saturday, taking the total since the start of the pandemic to 810.

SA Health said testing of close contacts of a miner who worked at the Granites mine in the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory remained ongoing.

He and five other members of his family — including a baby — have now tested positive for the Delta strain of COVID-19.

"We are awaiting test results from two people, while a number of people have travelled on from South Australia," SA Health said.

"All other close contacts in South Australia have returned negative results."
