Coronavirus case confirmed in Trinity College as University closes part of Dublin campus

Trinity College in Dublin has confirmed a positive case of coronavirus within the University.

Staff and students were alerted that a positive case of Covid-19 had been identified and that tracing has started to find anyone who has been in contact with the individual.

The University has said it will close part of the campus as a precaution and will begin cleaning the area.

An email sent to students and staff from the University reads: "We were informed of a positive case of COVID-19 (coronavirus) within Trinity College Dublin late on Thursday night (March 5).

"We are now working closely with the authorities to ensure that this individual receives the best care possible.

"The HSE will trace anyone who has been in contact with the infected individual to ensure they receive any necessary medical attention.

"The HSE and University will now take all appropriate steps to contain any further spread of the virus and protect your welfare and the welfare of the University community.

"The relevant part of the University (Floor 4 of the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute), and the lifts in TBSI, have been closed as a precautionary measure and will be cleaned in accordance with HSE guidelines.

"The rest of the University is open and operating as normal.

"However, the situation remains fluid and you should check your emails regularly as well as the latest official advice from the HSE and other statutory bodies."

Seven new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Ireland last night, bringing the total number of cases here to 13.

The HSE said it is now working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients may have had, to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer with the Department of Health, said: “Ireland remains in containment phase with just one case of community transmission.

"This is, however, a rapidly evolving situation. Public health doctors are working hard to ensure our containment measures are operating effectively.

“Most people who become infected with Covid-19 experience a mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for some."
