Coronavirus case confirmed at another Bristol school as entire year group sent home

An entire year group at a Bristol school is self-isolating after a single coronavirus case was confirmed.

Barton Hill Academy has closed its Year 5 bubble following an "isolated" case of the virus, with affected children instructed not to come back into school until next Monday (June 21).

Leaders at the primary school, which teaches more than 400 children, sent parents a letter on Friday (June 11) advising them not to be alarmed.

'Reminder to be vigilant'

The decision to close the year group bubble was made after discussions with executive team at the Venturers Trust, which runs the school, and is in line with national guidance, according to the letter.

It advised: "As you know, we have put extensive measures in place to ensure that our students and staff are as safe as possible as we have welcomed our young people back to school.

"This is an isolated individual case in the Year 5 bubble, so please do not be alarmed, but it is a reminder that we all need to remain vigilant, both in school and in the wider community.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England."

The school remains open to all other year groups and to nursery children.

Pupils in Year 5 have been told to self-isolate until midnight on Friday (June 18), and they will be able to return to school on the following Monday as long as they have no symptoms.

A separate letter sent to their parents read: "In line with the national guidance we ask that your child now stays at home and self-isolates.

"We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of COVID 19 to others in the community."

Bristol City Council has said it is taking a "robust approach" to coronavirus outbreaks at the city schools.

As of Wednesday (June 9), the authority said there were 25 schools or early years settings with at least one case of COVID-19 among children or staff.

It comes as the city records its highest daily increase in case numbers since February, with 96 new cases recorded yesterday (Sunday, June 13) in just 24 hours.

One of the schools to record a recent outbreak was Oasis Academy Marksbury Road in Bedminster, which had to close down two days before half term as a precaution.

According to a letter sent to parents last week, the "surge" in cases was understood to be linked to the Delta coronavirus variant.

Last week the council shared new guidance with schools following a "greater number of covid cases in schools, particularly primary".

Children reporting any symptoms - a headache, sore throat, cold symptoms, high temperature, a new continuous cough or a loss or change of smell or taste - have been asked to self-isolate immediately and arrange a test.

Families are also being encouraged to continue regularly testing themselves at home using the rapid lateral flow kits available to order for free.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lead a press conference this evening (Monday, June 14) confirming whether or not the Government is going ahead with the easing of lockdown restrictions next week.
