Coronavirus case at popular Newcastle restaurant - but colleagues get the all-clear

Staff at a Newcastle restaurant have tested negative for Covid-19, a day after a case with a colleague was confirmed.

Scream For Pizza, in Sandyford, closed on Friday after confirming an employee tested positive.

However management at the Starbeck Avenue restaurant confirmed it will now reopen on Tuesday, October 13, following a deep clean.

On Facebook, the restaurant stated the staff member fell ill on Tuesday, although their colleagues were now "clear to get back to work" following the negative tests.

"We want to deep clean the restaurant and take a few more days to ensure no one develops symptoms," added the firm, which is already taking orders for when it does reopen.

It claimed no customers could have been affected by the positive case, as - besides allowing a wedding party inside 15 weeks ago - the restaurant has been takeaway only since March.

But upon notice of the positive case, bosses posted that they were "absolutely devastated after having been so careful for seven months".

They added: "Only proves how insidious this disease is and how we are all being affected on so many levels".

Currently Newcastle has one of the highest infection rates in the country, w ith many of those cases in the city centre and surrounding areas.

Public Health England data showed that, in the week ending October 5, there were 69 cases in Sandyford and South Jesmond.
