Coronavirus: Care home deaths higher than hospital fatalities in South Ayrshire

More people with Covid-19 have died  in care homes than in hospitals in South Ayrshire.

Sadly a total of 93 people with coronavirus have lost their lives in the area - 45 in care homes, 43 in hospital and five elsewhere.

Across the whole of Ayrshire at least 241 people have passed away after being diagnosed with the virus so far according to data released by National Records of Scotland today. Last week the death total stood at 220 in the NHS Ayrshire & Arran health board area.

Deaths were Covid-19 was mentioned in the death certificate

- South Ayrshire: 93
- East Ayrshire: 65
- North Ayrshire: 83

South Ayrshire has the highest Covid-19 death toll in the county.  The figures take into account pandemic deaths up to May 17.

In neighbouring North Ayrshire 83 people lost their lives after contracting the virus while in East Ayrshire 65 have died.

The victims' death certificates stated that Covid-19 contributed to or caused their loss of life.

Up to May 17, 3,546 deaths have been registered in Scotland with Covid-19 mentioned in the death certificate.

Between May 11 and 17, 332 virus-related deaths were registered across the nation - showing a decrease of 83 from the previous week. It is the third weekly drop in a row.

Three quarters (76 per cent) of all deaths involving the deadly infection to date were of people aged 75 or over.
