Coronavirus: Cardiff High School to partly close as increasing numbers of staff and pupils self-isolate

One of Cardiff's biggest schools has announced it is partly closing because of the spread of coronavirus.

Headteacher Stephen Jones sent out a letter to parents and pupils on Wednesday announcing the decision.

He said that from Thursday (March 19), pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9, were not to attend school.

"Throughout this week the school has worked hard to maintain a positive learning environment for all of our pupils from Year 7 to Year 13," he said.

"However, with increasing numbers of families self isolating and high numbers of teaching and support staff unable to attend work, we have had to make the difficult decision to close to pupils in these years."

Pupils in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 should still attend school as normal. These are important years as they are preparing for their GCSE and A level exams next term.

He added: "We will review this decision on a day by day basis and keep you informed."

And told parents: "When your children arrive home this evening, they will have a detailed pack of work and further information from the school."

Teachers in schools across Wales have been planning for closures since last week, with many working out online plans for children to follow from home.

There has been mounting criticism that schools have not closed yet, despite the Government urging people to work from home.
