Coronavirus: Call The Midwife's new series and Christmas special put on hold amid outbreak

The new series of Call The Midwife and its highly-anticipated Christmas special has been put on hold amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Filming has been cancelled to protect the safety of the BBC drama's cast and crew as the highly-infectious virus sweeps across the UK and the rest of the world.

A statement from producers has been shared on social media, reading: "Very sadly, we have had to postpone the filming of this year's Call the Midwife Christmas Special and Series 10.

"Our priority is the safety of our amazing cast and crew, and we don't believe that shooting at the current time is feasible or responsible.

"However, the moment the situation improves, the nuns and nurses of Nonnatus House will be back on their bikes, bringing babies and joy into your living rooms.

"We send our love to the worldwide Call the Midwife family, and look forward to being back in Poplar soon.

"On behalf of everybody at Call The Midwife, we wish you all good health."

The BBC has also stopped filming for EastEnders.

The soap has been cut down to just two episodes a week to ration the remaining episodes until filming can begin again.

Over on ITV Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway will air this weekend for the first time ever without a studio audience.

Yesterday the death toll in Italy exceeded China's for the first time and now stands at 3,405.

Schools in the UK will close after lessons finish on Friday, with only vulnerable children and children of key workers allowed to stay in school.
