Coronavirus: Brit reported to be among dozens more passengers on quarantined cruise ship to test positive

The number of passengers infected with coronavirus on a quarantined cruise ship off the coast of Japan has increased from 20 to 61 - with one of the passengers reportedly from the UK.

Some 3,700 passengers and crew are on board the Diamond Princess, which is anchored off the coast of Yokohama for at least two weeks after passengers tested positive.

One of the passengers is originally from the UK, it is reported.

The checks began after an 80-year-old passenger from Hong Kong, who was on the ship in January, became ill after five days on board.

A separate cruise liner, called World Dream, has been quarantined after eight recent passengers caught the virus.

Japan's Health Minister, Kastunobu Kato, said: "The results of the remaining 171 tests came out and 41 tested positive.

"Today they will sent to hospitals in several prefectures, and we are now preparing for that."

Of the infected passengers; 28 are Japanese nationals, 11 are Americans and there are seven from Australia and Canada, three from China, one from the UK, New Zealand, Taiwan, Philippines and Argentina.

The new coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory, which can be fatal.

Latest figures show the virus has killed 636 people and infected 31,161 in mainland China, according to the country's National Health Commission.

There have been two deaths outside of mainland China - in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The World Health Organisation has declared a global health emergency but has stopped short at declaring a pandemic.

The death of a Chinese doctor who tried to warn about the coronavirus outbreak has led to unprecedented anger and grief in China.

Lie Wenliang, 34, an ophthalmologist, died on Thursday after treating patients in Wuhan with coronavirus.

At the end of December 2019 he noticed seven cases of a virus he thought looked like Sars - which caused a global epidemic in 2003. He urged fellow doctors in a group chat to wear protective clothing to avoid infection.

But he was summoned to the Public Security Bureau and told by police to "stop making false comments" and had been under investigation for "spreading rumours", when he first attempted to tell the world about his concerns.

The Chinese government has previously admitted its "shortcomings and deficiencies" in its response to the virus.

One person on social media said: "This is not the death of a whistleblower. This is the death of a hero."
