Coronavirus: Brit 'refused' from China rescue flight after coats made temperature spike

Two more Britons tested positive for coronavirus today as a top scientist warned the UK could suffer a “major outbreak”.

The fresh cases are linked to a ski chalet in the French Alps where five more British victims caught the deadly bug.

Worried health officials are scrambling to track down anyone who came into contact with the 11-strong group.

The “source carrier”, a middle-aged man from Brighton, East Sussex, travelled to the Alps from Singapore.

He then flew on to the UK four days later and is under quarantine in St Thomas’ Hospital in Central London.

A relation also tested positive and is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North London.

The second Briton to be diagnosed yesterday is dad-of-two living in Majorca, who also visited the ski chalet.

The other five British people, including Bob Saynor, 48, and his nine-year-old son, are being treated in France after they were struck down in Contamines-Montjoie.

A ninth Briton, lorry driver Alan Steele, is being treated in Japan after catching coronavirus on a cruise. The two other UK cases involve Chinese nationals studying at York University.

A plane carrying Britons from Wuhan in China landed in RAF Brize Norton yesterday.

The final evacuation flew 105 Brits and family and 95 Europeans. They will be monitored for a fortnight at a hotel in Milton Keynes, Bucks.

Two Britons were not allowed on the flight after failing temperature tests. But Josh Skarratts said he was wearing two jackets.

The death toll in China is 811 – deadlier than the 774 killed by SARS in 2002 to 2003. More than 37,000 people have been infected.

Prof Peter Piot, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said it poses more danger than ebola because its potential to spread is “much, much higher”.

The microbiologist, who co-discovered the presence of Aids in Africa, said: “If the number of people who get infected is huge, then that will also kill a number of people.”

Government sources said plans are in place to cope with a pandemic. Medical firms that had been stock-piling for a no-deal Brexit were told to maintain levels “for now”.
