Coronavirus: Bristol sees nearly 600 new COVID-19 infections on day lockdown is confirmed

Nearly 600 new cases of coronavirus were recorded across Bristol and its surrounding areas on the day Boris Johnson announced a new nationwide lockdown.

The data published by Public Health England at 4pm yesterday (Saturday, October 31) confirmed 568 new positive tests across the city and surrounding districts.

A steep rise in infections across the City of Bristol continued as 324 new cases were confirmed, while 127 more people were recorded as testing positive for the virus in South Gloucestershire.

Bath and North East Somerset saw 71 new cases while 46 positive tests were recorded across North Somerset.

It takes the total number of coronavirus cases across Bristol and its surrounding areas to 13,350 since the start of the pandemic in March.

Bristol will join the rest of England in entering a four-week lockdown on Thursday as the government takes measures in an attempt to quell the rise in infections in recent weeks.

Until then, it will remain under tier one plus restrictions, where local officials are using "locally developed targeted actions" in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.

The total number of people to have tested positive for COVID-19 across Bristol and its surrounding areas, as of 9am yesterday (Saturday, October 31), with new cases in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 6,728 (+324)
  • South Gloucestershire - 2,822 (+127)
  • North Somerset – 2,003 (+46)
  • Bath and North East Somerset – 1,797 (+71)

There were 326 deaths recorded within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Saturday, bringing the UK's total death toll to 46,555.

A total of 21,915 new infections were confirmed across the country as the number of people to have tested positive for coronavirus across the UK since March passed one million.
