Coronavirus Bristol: Another school tells pupils to isolate amid new case of COVID-19

Students at a Bristol school have been told to self isolate after a classmate tested positive for coronavirus.

Leaders at Winterbourne Academy have written to parents advising them a student at the school tested positive for the virus.

The school was alerted to the case by Public Health England.

It is not known what year group the affected student is in, or how many pupils have been told to self isolate.

The school remains open.

In a letter home to parents business manager Dawn Franklin said: “We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid within the school.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.

“The children who have been in direct prolonged contact with the confirmed case have been informed and will be staying home for 14 days from the infectious period and will return on October 1."

It is understood that the affected student was infected outside of the South Gloucestershire area.

Mrs Franklin added: “The transmission occurred outside of the South Gloucestershire area.”

Parents are being told, as long as their child is well, to send them to school as normal.

“We are keeping this under review."

A large number of schools across the Bristol area have reported cases of coronavirus since the start of the autumn term.

There have been 48 new coronavirus cases recorded in the Bristol area in the last 24 hours, according to the latest government data.

The City of Bristol has seen 19 new infections reported since yesterday, with a further nine new cases confirmed in South Gloucestershire.

A total of 4,427 people are now known to have had COVID-19 in and around Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic in March.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Bristol, as of 9am yesterday, with the number of new cases in brackets, is as follows:

  • City of Bristol - 1,795 (+19)
  • North Somerset - 1,125 (+9)
  • South Gloucestershire - 988 (+9)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 519 (+10)

It comes after another large rise in coronavirus infections across the UK in the last 24 hours.
