Coronavirus: Boots limits Lothians shoppers to two bottles of hand gel as demand skyrockets

As coronavirus cases around the UK are expected to spread, demand for hand sanitising gel and face masks is skyrocketing.

Many shops in Edinburgh and the Lothians have sold out of the items. Pharmacy chain Boots has imposed a limit of two gel bottles per customer to stop panic buying.

Ordering hand gel online is becoming much more expensive - multipacks of 24 Purell hand sanitiser bottles are going for as much as £250 on eBay.

The first Scottish case of coronavirus was confirmed at the weekend, while Nicola Sturgeon has said Scotland is preparing for a "significant outbreak."

The Kantar consultancy has reported that supermarket purchases of hand sanitiser are up 255% in February.

David Brisbane Tweeted a picture of a sign in the Livingston branch of boots, saying they had been "cleared out of hand gel."

It's a similar story across the UK, our colleagues in Hull and Leeds have also reported empty shelves in pharmacies and supermarkets.

A spokesperson for Boots said there had been an increase in sales of the gel, but that stock was still available in warehouses for stores and online.

They said: "The best way to help prevent catching a virus is by making sure that you regularly wash your hands with soap, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent transmission from surfaces, especially after blowing your nose, sneezing and coughing.

"Antiviral hand foams and gel can also be useful when you are out and about."

Ordinarily, hand gel sales are capped at 10 per person due to the product's alcohol content.
