Coronavirus: Best video conferencing apps if you're forced to work from home

This week, coronavirus cases around the world have skyrocketed, leading to widespread panic about the spread of the virus.

With coronavirus cases in the UK now in the thousands, many Brits have been advised to avoid the office and work from home instead.

But with distractions aplenty, it can be tricky to stay focused on your work while working from home.

Thankfully, there are several video conferencing apps available to make working from home as easy as possible.

From Skype to Zoom, here’s a round-up of the best video conferencing apps on the App Store and Google Play Store.

Zoom

Zoom is one of the most popular options, and allows you to start or join face-to-face video calls with up to 100 people.

It also has several handy features including screen-sharing, group messaging and the option to share photos, web and Google Drive, Dropbox or Box files.

Zoom is free to download on both the Google Play Store and App Store.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams has a host of helpful features to make working with your team as easy as possible while at home.

Unfortunately, the app crashed earlier this week due to a surge in use, but appears to be back up and running now.

The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play Store.

Skype

Skype is a great option to keep in contact with friends and family while working from home, but has been superseded by Microsoft Teams in terms of work use.

The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play Store.

Google Hangouts Meet

Google’s video conferencing offering is Google Hangouts Meet.

The app offers high-definition video and audio meetings with up to 250 participants, with handy real-time captions powered by Google speech-to-text technology.

This could be particularly useful if you’re not participating on a call, but need to follow along anyway.

The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play Store.
