Coronavirus: Bayern Munich and Dortmund stars agree pay cut to help save staff jobs

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich players have agreed to voluntary pay cuts to save jobs during the coronavirus crisis.

Dortmund boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, who will also take a reduced salary along with coach Lucien Favre, said the move was "a valuable sign of solidarity both externally and to our 850 employees and their families".

Bayern players will take a 20 per cent wage cut to stop the club laying off administrative staff. Players at Borussia Monchengladbach last week volunteered to take a pay cut to save £1m and they have been already followed by Werder Bremen and Schalke 04.

The decision comes as Birmingham City reportedly asked players earning more than £6,000-a-week to take 50 per cent pay cuts for the next four months amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The money will then be paid back to the players in instalments, once the season restarts.

According to The Telegraph, Birmingham sent an email to agents asking for help: "Given the unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in as a football club, as a business and as a country as a whole, we are reaching out to you in order to request your agreement to a short-term deduction in wages in order to assist the club to continue to run on a day-to-day basis in the current climate."
