Coronavirus: Barcelona and Real Madrid seasons may be over after La Liga president indication

La Liga president Javier Tebas has indicated he’s prepared to cancel the league season.

Football in Spain has been suspended until at least April 4 amid the global coronavirus pandemic.

Emergency restrictions have been put in place for two weeks to combat the spread of the virus.

The country has recorded more than 6,300 infections and there have been 191 deaths, making it Europe’s worst-hit country after Italy.

And Tebas isn’t afraid to make the difficult decision to abandon the current campaign should it be in the best interests of containing the virus.

In an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, he said: “I have been working all weekend via video conferences and telephone calls with European institutions and Spanish club presidents.

“We have a very important week ahead.

“What we are dealing with now will end the competition, and this will be a week of important decisions in Europe.

“I have been working with contacts in Italy and Germany to try and square up schedules, but this is a serious health matter.

“With 25% of the season still to go, we have will have to review our entire budget if the season ends now.”

Most clubs in Spain have now suspended their training sessions and club activites.

At the time of the suspension, Barcelona are two points ahead of rivals Real Madrid as they chase a ninth title in 12 seasons.

The World Health Organisation has stated Europe is now the ‘epicentre’ of the pandemic.

People have been banned from leaving their homes in Spain, except for buying essentials and medicines or for work.

Meanwhile, schools are already shut across the nation.

UEFA will hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the potential resumption of both the Champions League and the Europa League.

Whether Euro 2020 should go ahead this summer will also be discussed.
