Coronavirus: Ayrshire care homes in plea to visitors

Care homes in Irvine and Kilwinning are pleading with friends and relatives to limit visits to residents.

Cumbrae Lodge, Fullarton, Abbeyfield and Buckreddan care homes have asked friends and family of residents to avoid 'non-essential' visits to the sites; in light of the risk the coronavirus poses to the elderly.

Although managers insist visitors will not be refused entry, at this time, it is currently under review.

A spokeswoman for Fullarton care home said: "To minimise the risk to residents, we are restricting all non-essential visitors from going to our homes.

"This is a decision that has not been taken lightly.

"However, the health and safety of our residents is paramount and as a responsible care provider, we have to make decisions which are in the best interest of our residents."

Meanwhile, Buckreddan care centre said on their Facebook page: "Due to the increased number of confirmed cases of coronavirus within North Ayrshire, we have made the decision that in the best interest of our residents and staff any external visits to Buckreddan Care Centre should be kept to a minimum.

"With immediate effect we would ask that you do not visit or reduce visits to only when necessary.

"We can confirm that no cases have been reported that are connected to the care centre & this is purely a precautionary measure.

"Thank you for your co-operation."
