Coronavirus: Award-winning restaurant 'devastated' as it closes its doors

Bosses of an award-winning Bristol restaurant have announced they will be closing as the coronavirus outbreak intensifies.

Owners of Box-E, who specialise in serving up some of the best seasonal dishes in the city, said they were 'devastated' they would have to close their doors.

But they insisted the health of their diners and staff had to take priority as many independent businesses across the city face an uncertain future after a partial lockdown was indicated by the government today (Monday).

The restaurant was awarded with a Bib Gourmand, given to places deemed to be good quality and value, by the Michelin Guide in October.

People have been told to end all non-essential contact and work from home where possible.

'At risk' groups including over 70s, pregnant women and patients with chronic illnesses have been told to self-isolate immediately during a press conference this afternoon.

Shortly after the announcement, bosses at the Wapping Wharf eatery posted on Twitter: "We’re going to be closing for a while.

"It’s a devastating decision to have to make but we have a social responsibility to our customers and staff to protect them from coronavirus and ‘social distancing’ is not possible in our tiny box.

"We hope to be able to welcome you back one day."

Dozens of supporters responded to the news.

One wrote: "This is so sad to hear but you need to take care of yourselves. Looking forward to having you back after the madness- big Wapping Wharf party."

While someone else said: "We will ALL be back and we will stand together. Let us know if you need anything at all."

Vegan fast food kings Oowee Diner has also confirmed a partial closure.

A spokesperson said their branches would only be accepting online and telephone orders.
