Coronavirus: Appeal to find couple who donated goodies to care home staff

Staff at a care home are appealing for help to track down a kind couple who handed in donations of goodies after their holiday was cancelled.

The couple made a surprise visit to Renfrew Care Home armed with bags of supplies including tea, coffee, scones, diluting juice, biscuits, scones, jam and tinned meat.

They told staff their holiday had been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak and, with their refund, they wanted to give something back.

Senior social care worker Jacqueline Masterson told the Paisley Daily Express: “It was such a kind thing to do.

“It had been a tough day at the home.

“It was Mother’s Day, so people hadn’t been able to see their mums – residents and staff.

“On a day like that, to get something in from someone who’d lost their holiday gave everyone a wee lift.”

Jacqueline said the care home won’t be able to share the donation with residents as all their food has to be prepared and cooked in-house.

However, it means the hard working staff will be able to enjoy some treats and not worry about getting to the shops for a while.

“This will all go to the staff and we are all very grateful for that,” she said.

“In the current climate, we’ve got staff working an early shift but they’re often staying for a full day.

“Having this donation means they don’t have to worry about getting to the shops.”

Renfrew Care Home is a Renfrewshire Council-run 60-bed unit in the town’s Cockels Loan.

It is currently not receiving any visitors, the same as all other care homes across the country.

Jacqueline said the current situation is hard on all staff and residents.

“We’ve got staff who can’t work due to health reasons, so they’ve been put on leave and we’ve got other staff trying to pick up the slack,” she said.

“Management are trying to recruit other carers and people from other sectors to come in.

“It’s all hands to the pump at the moment.”

She added: “I thought the couple might have a connection to the care home. A relative might have stayed there in the past or something like that, but they didn’t.

“They live locally and said they wanted to give it to us.

“I didn’t even get a chance to say thank you as I was so taken aback and it had been a really tough day.

“I’d love to track them down to say thank you properly.

“It was a lovely thing for them to do.”
