Coronavirus and pregnancy - advice for pregnant mums as virus spreads

Over the last week, cases of coronavirus have continued to increase in the UK and it is "likely" that this will continue in the coming days.

Currently, 39 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the UK with the risk to the public being raised from low to moderate my chief medical officers.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has outlined the Government's strategy to help contain coronavirus in the UK and prevent it spreading.

The public has already been warned that the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to suffering more seriously from the virus.

But little has been said on those who are pregnant.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of those that have issued advise for expectant mothers who may have their own concerns.

The CDC said: "We do not have information from published scientific reports about susceptibility of pregnant women to COVID-19.

"Pregnant women experience immunologic and physiologic changes which might make them more susceptible to viral respiratory infections, including COVID-19."

They also added that while COVID-19 is thought to be spread mainly by close contact with an infected person, it is unknown as to whether it can be passed onto the baby before it's born.

The CDC said: "However, in limited recent case series of infants born to mothers with COVID-19 published in the peer-reviewed literature, none of the infants have tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

"Additionally, virus was not detected in samples of amniotic fluid or breastmilk."

The NHS have also said that pregnant women should follow hygiene measures to stop viruses like coronavirus spreading, such as washing your hands with soap and water often, and avoiding people who are unwell.

The general hygiene advice from the World Health Organization (WHO) says to wash your hands frequently, maintain social distancing - at least one metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, practice respiratory hygiene - which means covering your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze, and if you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early.
