Infections surge across Bristol region as hundreds of Covid patients in hospital

Almost 1,000 new coronavirus cases and six deaths have been confirmed across the Bristol region over the past 24 hours.

Today's record figure comes as hospital admissions in our city continue to spike.

The Government's latest breakdown of data (January 7) show 948 people were diagnosed with the virus in Bristol and its neighbouring areas.

Our city saw the biggest rise, with 428 more cases.

South Gloucestershire recorded a jump of 225, and two further deaths were confirmed in this district.

Four more people died after contracting the virus in North Somerset, their deaths were also reported today.

Public Health England's latest data - for January 5 - shows Bristol's hospitals have 275 Covid patients, rising from 252 confirmed on December 30.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +158 (5,454)

  • Bristol: +428 (20,844)

  • North Somerset: +137 (6,617)

  • South Gloucestershire: +225 (9,817)

UK cases

The UK's coronavirus death toll has risen 1,162 over the last 24 hours, a record increase since the first wave in April.

It marks the second largest single-day increase in recorded deaths during the course of the pandemic, with only April 21 seeing a higher figure of 1,224 deaths.

Cases have risen by 52,618 as the country remains in the grip of the devastating spike in infections.

Today's figures of total deaths in all settings compare to 964 deaths last Thursday.

Earlier today, figures revealed a total of 819 people have died from coronavirus at hospitals.
