Coronavirus: All North Lanarkshire leisure and culture facilities to close amid restrictions

All of North Lanarkshire’s leisure and culture facilities are to shut from the end of today (Tuesday, March 17), and will “remain closed for the foreseeable future”.

The council’s announcement follows the new government coronavirus advice on drastically reducing social contact, asking that everyone cease all non-essential contact.

It means each of the area’s museums, libraries, swimming pools, gyms, golf courses, community centres, school lets, cafes at country parks, community arts and sports classes, and venues Sir John Wilson town hall in Airdrie, plus Motherwell theatre and concert hall and Bellshill cultural centre, is now shut to the public.

A statement from North Lanarkshire Council said: “These are very challenging times for everyone and we appreciate your understanding, support and co-operation.

“We hope to reschedule some of our events and all customers with existing tickets will be eligible for a refund or exchange; details will be available in the coming days.

“All NL Leisure memberships and direct debits will be automatically temporarily suspended – you do not need to take any action. There will [then] be further, direct contact with members.”

Neighbouring South Lanarkshire Council is also closing all of its leisure and sports facilities.
