Coronavirus: Aldi tells parents to leave kids at home - 'one trolley, one person'

Aldi has told customers not to bring their children, partners or anyone else with them to the shop if possible.

"One person, one trolley," a post on the official Aldi page reads.

It adds that parents can shop with children "where necessary", but adds that people should shop alone if they can.

"Please shop individually wherever possible. In order to help with social distancing, we are encouraging all customers to try and reduce the number of family members they bring with them into our stores," the supermarket said.

The post quickly racked up thousands of likes and shares as well as hundreds of comments on social media.

Customers mostly backed the decision on social media.

"It can be difficult as a single parent. But remember every time you take your children in a supermarket you are increasing their risk of catching the virus and putting the shop staff at further risk. Only take them if you absolutely have to," one wrote.

Another added: "Good call. I have seen many couples shopping. It’s not leisure trip at the moment to do shopping. Please be considerate."

Ed Harper wrote: "How are people still needing to be told this??. Well done though Aldi."

But not everyone was in favour.

"Be nice to let single parent shop safely with their children without getting dirty looks and comments. Taking kids shopping is their last resort," Laura Kelly wrote in response to the post.

Kas Scott added: "Some people have to take there partner with them especially if they are not under care conditions. So you can't leave them on there own at home or in the car. This goes for children too. Not every parent can get there children minded so they can go shopping."

Lynsey Freestone commented: "What if you don't have a car and can't carry shopping on your own? My husband drives for a supermarket and online shopping at the moment is for the most vulnerable."

But other customers were quick to point out that Aldi had accounted for those in most need of having children or partners with them.

Laura Turner wrote: "If you read the wording properly you will understand that Aldi (as well as other supermarkets) understand that shopping alone isn’t always possible but, where you CAN and where you are ABLE to, then please DO it and respect others.

"For goodness sakes! It’s not difficult!"
