The iconic zebra crossing at Abbey Road, made famous after featuring on the cover of The Beatles’ 1969 album of the same name, has been repainted during the UK-wide coronavirus lockdown.
A London crew was able to repaint the crossing in front of Abbey Road Studios, as the area’s typically heavy footfall was reduced by new social-distancing measures put in place by the government.
The crossing was designated a site of national importance in 2010, and can only be altered with the permission of local authorities.
A 50th anniversary box set of Abbey Road, featuring previously unreleased demos, was released last year. It was the best-selling vinyl LP of the decade, according to Nielsen Music.
This week, George Harrison’s son Dhani announced that his father’s Material World Foundation is donating $500,000 (£408k) to the MusiCares Coronavirus Relief Fund.
The organisation has also initiated the “Inner Light Challenge”, which encourages fans to post covers of Beatles song “The Inner Light”. For every fan that takes part, the foundation will donate an additional dollar up to $100,000.
A new documentary about The Beatles from director Peter Jackson is scheduled for release on 4 September.
