Coronavirus: 19 deaths confirmed in Bristol region in one week

Coronavirus related deaths continue to rise across the Bristol region, with 19 more confirmed in one week.

The latest government figures also show 457 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in a single day in Bristol and its neighbouring areas.

Today (November 11), four coronavirus-related deaths were confirmed in Bristol.

Over the past week, nine have been recorded in our city, four in North Somerset, two in Bath and North East Somerset and four in South Gloucestershire.

For the second consecutive day, Bristol recorded 227 new infections. South Gloucestershire also recorded a significant rise today, with 117 cases.

Meanwhile, Bath and North East Somerset saw a further 42 cases, and North Somerset reported 71.

Across the South West, another 111 patients were admitted to hospital with coronavirus in just one day, bringing the total number of Covid-19 patients in hospital in the region currently to 708.

UK-wide, the number of people who died of coronavirus has risen by 595 in the latest 24-hour period, and daily cases have climbed by 22,950.

Local breakdown of daily figures:

  • BANES: +42 (2,413)
  • Bristol: +227 (9,634)
  • North Somerset: +71 (2,742)
  • South Gloucestershire: +117 (4,138)

Mass testing

Health chiefs are finalising a plan for coronavirus mass-testing in Bristol as the number of cases rose again.

Mayor Marvin Rees welcomed the government -funded scheme but said the city’s rate was not yet coming down and that more middle-aged people were contracting Covid-19 because of social mixing.

Speaking today (Wednesday, November 11) during a fortnightly press conference he said there have been 422.3 cases per 100,000 residents in the past seven days, up from 398 the week before.

He said it would take about two weeks before the second national lockdown started reducing the numbers.
