Coronavirus: 15 more deaths as hundreds of new cases confirmed across Bristol region

A further 15 people have died after contracting coronavirus across Bristol and its neighbouring areas, the latest figures show.

Bristol's death toll increased by nine today (January 27), while seven people died in South Gloucestershire, four in North Somerset and two in Bath and North East Somerset.

Across the West of England, a further 262 new cases were reported on Wednesday.

Bristol saw the biggest jump, with 128 infections. Our city's rate per 100,000 people has now dipped to 331.7 - down from 510 at the start of January.

South Gloucestershire recorded the second-highest cases, with 54. This district's rate stands at 308.3.

Public Health England's latest data - published on January 19 - shows there were 430 Covid patients in Bristol's hospitals, and 64 people battling on ventilators.

The figures come on the same day Boris Johnson extended England's third lockdown until at least March 8.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mr Johnson said measures - including reopening schools - would not be lifted until then.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +41 (7,199)

  • Bristol: +128 (26,130)

  • North Somerset: +39 (8,599)

  • South Gloucestershire: +54 (12,730)

UK cases

The UK coronavirus death toll has soared by 1,725, with a further 25,308 cases also confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to 3,715,054.

The Government said a further 1,725 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday, bringing the UK total to 101,887.

Today's total of daily deaths is the second-highest increase of the pandemic, a day after the UK passed the grim 100,000 milestone
