Coronavirus: 13 more deaths and hundreds of new infections across Bristol region

A further 13 people have died after contracting coronavirus across Bristol and its neighbouring areas, the latest figures show.

And 528 more people have tested positive for the virus over the past 24 hours in the West of England.

Four deaths were confirmed in Bristol, where 223 people tested positive for Covid on Friday.

A further four coronavirus patients also died in South Gloucestershire, where 148 positive lab tests were returned.

In Bath and North East Somerset, four more people died and 76 infections were confirmed overnight.

One person died in North Somerset, where 81 new cases were recorded.

According to the latest Government figures - published on January 19 - there's 430 Covid inpatients in our city's hospitals - the highest since the pandemic first hit. And 64 people are on ventilators.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +76 (6,935)

  • Bristol: +223 (25,243)

  • North Somerset: +81 (8,324)

  • South Gloucestershire: +148 (12,226)

UK deaths and cases

A further 1,401 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the UK.

The number of new cases has climbed above 40,000 for the first time this week after 40,261 infections were announced today.

However, the UK's R rate dropped to below one for the first time in months.
