Coronavirus | At 163, Gujarat sees biggest spike in cases on April 16

Gujarat recorded 163 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases on Thursday with the tally going up to 929 while three persons died and 73 including nine had recovered so far. 

So far , 812 people are under treatment and stable while eight are on ventilator support with 20,903 samples tested in the State. 

However, in addition to the surging cases, another worrisome factor is that the disease has spread to 24 of the 33 districts with the highest number 545 in Ahmedabad.

Though the bulk of the cases are mostly coming from main cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara, a few cases have also emerged from rural districts, raising concern for the authorities who are grappling with the spread of the contagious disease.

Three main cities contribute approximately 75% of the cases: Ahmedabad 545, Vadodara 128 and Surat 88. Ahmedabad recorded 17 deaths and Vadodara and Surat five each. 

On Thursday, 95 cases had been reported from Ahmedabad while the second largest lot came from Surat, which had hitherto not seen such a single day spike in infection cases.

Alarmed by the spike particularly in the congested slum areas in Surat, the State government has decided to impose curfew in four police station jurisdiction areas of the city as a desperate measure aimed at total lockdown

Now, only women will be allowed to go out for buying essential items from 1-4 p.m. till April 22 in those pockets.

Before Surat, the State government had imposed curfew in the walled city areas of Ahmedabad which have become hotspots as the virus has spread rapidly infecting a large number of people.
