Coronation Street villain Bill Ward appears as police officer in ITV's Hunt for Raoul Moat

The second episode of The Hunt for Raoul Moat brought a shock return to ITV for former Coronation Street villain Bill Ward, 15 years after his character Charlie Stubbs was murdered by Tracey Barlow.

After all of the build up, the three part series based on the very real life events of 2010, made its debut on Sunday night, arriving in the coveted 9pm slot for the first of three consecutive nights. The Hunt for Raoul Moat's opener focused on the relationship between Moat and his ex Samantha Stobbart, as well as Samantha's new romance with Christopher Brown, who Moat shot dead just days after being released from prison.

The closing moments saw Matt Stokoe, in the role of Moat, recreate the harrowing moment when the killer shot and blinded PC David Rathband, as the cop sat in a patrol car on the outskirts of Newcastle.

Newcastle born actor Bill, who went onto appear in Emmerdale as James Barton, following his Coronation Street demise at the hands of Tracey, stars in The Hunt for Raoul Moat as copper Mike Adamson, a character based on one of Northumbria Police's chief officers involved in the case 13 years ago.

While he met a grisly end thanks to another Wetherfield villain, Bill played the wicked Charlie, who subjected girlfriend, Rovers Return barmaid Shelley to months of mental and physical abuse, including a horrific scene where he yanked earrings out of her ears. Having developed acrophobia as a result of Charlie's mistreatment of her, Shelley then jilted him at the altar on their wedding day.

He then glot involved with Tracey, but felt her wrath after cheating on her with Maria and her final act of revenge was to strike him over the head with a heavy ornament, with him dying in hospital from his injuries.
