Coronation Street fans said they found the ITV soap "unbearable" to watch tonight as Peter suffered and collapsed.
Tonight's episode saw Peter stumble into his home and tell Steve that he was sober and not drunk and needed medical help.
But Steve didn't believe him and said: "Sober, you can't even stand up, I'm going to have to lock you in for your own good while I go to work."
As Steve returned Peter begged: "I need an ambulance, Steve, ambulance."
Steve said: "Look at the state of you how can you do this to yourself, enough of the lies, you could live another ten or twenty years and Oliver..."
Peter said: "Who's Oliver?
Steve fumed and said: "What did you just say, we're finished, if you want to drink yourself to death the first bottle's on me."
Steve stormed out and told Tracey that Peter was "wasted" and what Peter had said to her and how hurt he was by it.
Tracey and Steve went back into the house and found Peter collapsed on the floor.
They then called an ambulance with Steve telling Nick he'd gone to hospital with what he thought was suspected alcohol poisoning.

And viewers couldn't believe what they were seeing, with many finding it hard to watch.
Lizzielou said: "This is unbearable to watch tonight."
Ryan Love said: "These Steve and Peter scenes are unbearable."
And Evie said: "Peter’s breaking my heart, Chris is so brilliant."
