Coronation Street tragedy as Jacob Hay's dark past exposed in devastating twist

Coronation Street is set to experience a heartbreaking and tragic storyline as Jacob Hay's dark past gets exposed in a devastating twist, which will rock the cobbles.

Jacob Hay, played by Jack Ryan, is back on the scene after arriving in Coronation Street as a drug dealer who had been recruited by nasty man Harvey Gaskell, played by Will Mellor.

In the soap, Jacob's job was to not only deal drugs, but to groom young and impressionable recruits for the drug dealing gang to exploit.

Jacob ended up roping Simon Barlow, played by Alex Bain, into the drug dealing circle – which caused a massive fall out and ultimately saw Harvey accidentally murder Natasha instead of Leanne, leaving young Sam without a mum.

It has been revealed that the newcomer is gearing up to unleash one of his darkest secrets while attempting to justify his reasoning for getting involved with the drug gang.

Last week Amy Barlow, played by Elle Mulvaney, and Summer Spellman, played by Harriett Bibby, bumped into Jacob outside the hospital during last Friday's instalment. He appeared to be bruised and beaten, but claimed to have left his old life behind, but the two girls were unbothered and unsympathetic.

Over the next few months, Jacob is set to build a relationship with Amy as he becomes part of the community situated on the cobbled streets in Manchester.

Attempting to start a fresh, it's been revealed that Jack's character might need to delve into his past.

The actor recently opened up in a press conference where he explained that his alter-ego is troubled for a reason, and viewers of the soap might find out why over the coming months.

Speaking to the press he said: "I think he's always, in one way or another, going to be tied up in his unsavoury past.

"I think it's going to be a defining feature of him moving forward whether he likes it or not but I think he is genuinely wanting to change."

Jack continued: "He genuinely wants to be a better person and create a new life for himself," he continued before discussing his character's past.

"I think it's [also] important to point out that Jacob is a victim as well [as Simon] in regards to the whole drug situation.

"He's a young lad and in the same way Jacob groomed Simon, Harvey also groomed Jacob in the first place to get him involved in the gang.

"I think the reason he was doing all of that stuff was that he was being blackmailed and he was being forced into it."

He then went on to say: "I think because Harvey is back in prison, I think this is the perfect time for Jacob to be like, 'This is my opportunity.

"'This is my chance to create a new life for myself.' So even though there is that, it's not going to be easy for him to leave the gang.

"But in regards to why he wanted to [leave the gang], I just think he genuinely wants a new beginning and he wants a fresh start for himself."

Jacob starts to get closer to Amy, where she learns more about his life growing up and how his parents were mostly absent leaving the young boy to fend for himself.

It comes to light that Jacob was in fact a vulnerable child, in need of money, which then saw him get exploited by Harvey.

Jacob decided to stay within the realms of the dangerous gang, otherwise he might have risked getting killed – so had no other choice but to recruit more young boys.

The story is set to unfold over the next few weeks, but will Simon forgive him? Or will he end up dealing drugs again? Only time will tell.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV
