Coronation Street stars undergo 'coaching' to tackle online trolls

Coronation Street cast members undergo coaching to help them combat online trolls.

All the show's actor are offered professional guidance to help with social media use in the wake of a number of stars quitting the platforms.

Kym Marsh, the Street's Michelle Connor, left twitter after abuse two years ago and hasn't returned.

Now Kerri Quinn, pregnant Vicky Jefferies, has given up after the comments became too much.

The 36-year-old is leaving the show before the end of the year and has spoken to the Belfast Telegraph about how she has suffered at the hands of trolls.

But she says social media abuse is a huge downside to the job (Eamonn and James Clarke)

“People can be brutal and it feels like when they get something in their head they just run with it," she revealed.

“I’ve honestly been amazed at how heartless some people can be. Some of the social media things people say are awful.

“It’s like they think they can write anything about you no matter how hurtful and brutal.”

It's all about to kick off on the Cobbles (ITV)

“You’re prepped for this stuff now. They’re really on it.

“There’s a lot of support. The crew are amazing.’’

She is leaving the Cobbles but is thankful for her time playing tormented Vicky, poorly treated by Robert Preston.

"It's been crazy," she said. "It started off as 10 weeks and just got extended and extended. It's been an amazing experience - but it wasn't going to last forever."

"My last filming days are the first week in November," she reveals. "It's okay, all things come to an end. Vicky has to go out on a big storyline - and she definitely will."

A Corrie spokesman said: “Cast can ask for assistance or extra advice at any time.”
