Coronation Street stars hoping to restart filming in June before episodes run out

Coronation Street star Andy Whyment has revealed they are hoping to restart filming in June before all their episodes run out.

The cast and crew of the hit ITV soap stopped filming last month amid the coronavirus outbreak, but the show is continuing to air all the previously-recorded episodes.

The schedule has been cut back to keep Corrie on TV for as long as possible, but Andy, 39, who plays Kirk Sutherland, says they will run out in early July.

Speaking on the United Podcast, Andy explained they are all hoping they will be able to start filming again in June to avoid Corrie leaving screens.

He said: "I think we've got until the beginning of July in the can. So we need to get back by the middle of June with a bit of luck otherwise it's going to go off air.

"A lot of the airlines have said they're going to start flying again mid-June so hopefully if that's going to happen then hopefully we should be able to get back to work with a bit of luck so fingers crossed."

He went on to reveal that the stars of the soap were told news of the shutdown in an email from ITV two days after Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised the pubs and clubs to shut.

Andy admits many stars were disappointed with the news, as they had been determined to continue filming for as long as possible.

He said: "We worked up until the Friday when Boris closed pubs, and we had the schedule up to the following Thursday.

"We had an email on the Sunday saying that would be the end, they were standing everyone down, which is fair enough.

"We were all saying we were happy to carry on as long as we can but I think work just felt that if all the pubs and clubs were shutting then it's probably just the right thing for us to do to shut down."
