Coronation Street stars head back to work as filming resumes after coronavirus shutdown

The Coronation Street cast were seen heading back to work this morning as filming finally resumed.

Bosses were forced to halt filming back in March as the coronavirus pandemic swept across the UK, with episodes being rationed so it could stay on air.

But last week they announced that the Corrie cast and crew would be back on set on June 9 after 11 weeks away.

Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Metcalfe, Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster), Mikey North (Gary Windass), Alexandra Mardell (Emma Brooker), Sally Carman (Abi Franklin), Harry Visinoni (Seb Franklin) were all seen driving into the set in Salford, Greater Manchester in their own cars.

They all seemed to be in high spirits and some even waved to the cameras as they went back to work.

Corrie stopped filming on March 23 when the UK went into lockdown.

Since then it has aired Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm as bosses made sure it didn't have to go off air.

The show will be continue to be on for three episodes a week, which means it will stay on air throughout July.

Safety measures have been put in place on set that will lower the risk of the spread of coronavirus.

Social distancing will have to be maintained during filming, which means no kissing scenes.

Members of the cast and crew who are over the age of 70 won't be allowed back on set straight away.

This means Bill Roache who plays Ken Barlow, Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts), Maureen Lipman (Evelyn Plummer), Rula Lenska (Claudia Colby), Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Malcolm Hebden (Norris Cole) will all be temporarily written out.

Those with an underlying health condition also won't be able to return.

Everyone will have their temperatures checked on a daily basis.

Props will be sanitised and the make up and costume department will work remotely.
