Coronation Street star Lisa George left half-blind in one eye after stroke

Coronation Street actress Lisa George has been left half-blind in her right eye after suffering a mini-stroke.

The 50-year-old, famed for playing Beth Sutherland in the soap, haemorrhaged behind her optic nerve four years ago and the incident left lasting damage to her vision.

Lisa, who has type 2 diabetes, detailed what happened to The Sun and shared that she was told a mini-stroke caused a change in her eyesight.

She says she was also hit in the eye with some rope and that she still does not know what actually led to the damage.

She said: “I haemorrhaged behind my optic nerve four years ago and I’m half-blind in my right eye, they said it was like a stroke but also I got hit in the eye with a bit of rope.

“They think I’d had some mini-stroke but a specialist said it has to be the rope, I still don’t know."

As Lisa suffers from type 2 diabetes she has only appeared in the soap a few times this year as she has been shielding amid the coronavirus pandemic.

She returned to Corrie set to film a few scenes in September and October but won’t be returning until well into next year.

The soap sensation starred on the last series of Dancing On Ice and prior to her skating stint, she shared that she wanted to appear on the show to help battle her diabetes.

She told: "Everyone is saying it will be nice for people to see the real me. But actually, I agreed to do it because I am turning 50 in October this year, which is a huge deal, and I am determined to get fit. Instead of fat and diabetic, which I currently am.

"I have type 2 diabetes which I want to get rid of. I skated when I was a child until I fell and cut my chin open in a competition. Then I lost my confidence and stopped. It’s been 40 years since I’ve been on the ice.

In February, Lisa and professional skater Tom Naylor narrowly missed out on the Dancing On Ice semi-final.
