Coronation Street star Irene Sutcliffe aka Maggie Clegg dies aged 88

Coronation Street star Irene Sutcliffe has died aged 88.

She was best known for playing Maggie Clegg in ITV's Coronation Street, running Weatherfield’s corner shop with her alcoholic husband, Les, played by John Sharp.

Maggie’s storylines included her hard life with Les, which led to their divorce two years later, and her relationship with adopted son Gordon - whose birth mother was her sister Betty Turpin.

Maggie later married reformed alcoholic Ron Cooke, on 10 July 1974.

Irene shared the screen with Corrie legends Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples, Len Fairclough and Emily Nugent during her seven years on the Cobbles.

She left the soap in 1975.

According to an obituary, Irene died on May 3 aged 88. Her cause of death is unknown.

Sutcliffe was born and brought up in Burnley, Lancashire during her early life and did her acting training at LAMDA theatre school.

She made her West End debut in Polly Seedy-Stockings, and in 1980, she was famed for her performance in Time and the Conways at the Greenwich Theatre.

Irene made her final West End appearance in Wit in 2000, while her last TV appearance was in The Royals in 2015 as the king's mother.

Irene also appeared in TV shows The Bill, Holby City, Doc Martin and Doctors.
