Coronation Street spoilers: Steve McDonald becomes getaway driver for knife-wielding criminal as ITV bosses beef up security

It looks like Coronation Street viewers need to get ready for another high octane storyline as Steve McDonald is attacked by an armed robber carrying a knife.

And while the Cobbles cabbie battled with the criminal, the crew experienced beefed up security after being hit by a real life theft while filming in Bolton.

Several Corrie stars were filming scenes near Bolton Rugby Union Club when thieves targeted a nearby storage unit base on Friday before making off with a generator.

The pictures were captured as the ITV soap films the dramatic storyline in Eccles, which sees Dave requesting Steve to stop at a garage - before throwing on a balaclava and robbing the place at knifepoint.

A terrified Steve then inadvertently becomes Dave’s getaway driver, and although he escapes unharmed, he becomes a suspect for the robbery and is interviewed by the police.

An ITV spokeswoman told the M.E.N. of the theft: "We can confirm a small domestic generator was stolen during a low-level opportunistic theft from the unit base of filming today for Coronation Street while the crew were on location in Bolton.

"The programme's cast and crew weren't at the unit base at the time.

"The incident was reported to the police and filming wasn't affected."
