Coronation Street sparks outrage with Sarah Platt's 'casual racism' to Adam Barlow

Coronation Street viewers were furious with Sarah Platt while watching Thursday's show.

She was embroiled in a row with her estranged husband Adam Barlow, after he flirted with their neighbour, Alina Pop.

Furious Sarah made a comment about Adam's nationality, calling him a "stupid smug Scottish git".

Some viewers took offence to this and even accused the show of "casual racism".

One tweeted: "Well thats the Scottish audience switching off #casualracism."

Another complained: "You know that referring to someone's national origins as an insult or reason to deny something has been held to be racist, Sarah Platt?! #ScottishGit."

"Corrie why did you need to include 'Scottish' in Sarah's rant? was 'Stupid, Smug, Git' not enough? Wonder how many more Scottish references you’re going to throw in #RacistCorrie," moaned a third.

"Scottish git, skatin on thin ice there Sarah," warned another.

Another added: "Oooh I think that was a bad decision with the Corrie script tonight.

"Sarah calling Adam a smug Scottish Git is not cool, should have just stuck with a smug git".

Others applauded Sarah for giving Adam what for, and defended the show's use of the line.

One ranted: "So calling a Scottish person Scottish now is racist? F*****g get a grip, it undermines actual, real, offensive racism.

"Do these people get paid for making a career out of being offended! #Corrie ".

Another giggled: ”Stupid smug Scottish git.” funniest line I've heard in a soap in year's. #Corrie ".

"Stupid smug Scottish git! Has to be the best line, for a long while!" added a third.

MirrorOnline has contacted the show for comment.
