Coronation Street shock as Debbie's true reason for return is uncovered

There was a shock for Coronation Street viewers tonight as Debbie Webster's true reason behind her return is uncovered.

Property developer Debbie, played by Sue Devaney, arrived back in Weatherfield in September as the sister of Kevin Webster.

She was seemingly brought back to break the news to Kevin that their Auntie Vi had died and has left her £200k and tells her brother she wants him to have the money.

But there's more to it than that as Debbie has been exposed as being as in cahoots with troublemaker Ray Crosby who, unaware to residents on the cobbles, is planning on flattening the whole street for a new development.

Debbie is being used as the mole on the street in a plan which will see her going against family, friends and neighbours in her bid to coax residents to sell up in any way she can.

And brother Kevin is first in the firing line when Debbie tells Ray about how she knows he blackmailed Kevin into selling him the garage.

But Ray points out that if they're to go ahead in business, she needs to toughen up.

Speaking at a press event, actress Sue, who returned to the ITV soap after 34 years, pleads Debbie's innocence and says her character doesn't know who she has gotten in with when it comes to Ray despite being his business partner.

"Debbie thinks she is doing everything for the good of everybody else," Sue says.

"She doesn't do it from a place have '[evil laugh] I'm going to destroy all the houses in Corrie."

The 52-year-old adds: "With Debbie, I don't think she is, in her heart as she is from that area, she thinks 'I'm going to make that place so much better than it is'.

"I don't think she realises the consequences of these people that have lived there all their lives and she's going in there and ripping down an area."

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
