Coronation Street's Tanisha Gorey tipped as a 'rising star' over her heartbreaking scenes as Asha Alahan

Coronation Street fans have been in awe of Tanisha Gorey's performance as Asha Alahan, who is struggling with her body image and self confidence.

Seventeen-year-old Tanisha has been tipped as a 'rising star' following heartbreaking scenes showing Asha ordering skin lightening cream to make her skin paler.

Asha, the daughter of Dev Alahan, has turned to the cream after a family trip to India, leaving her skin red raw and sore.

The teen wants to look like her Bollywood idols, prompting her distraught father to tear down the posters on her walls in harrowing scenes.

In scenes screened on Friday Dev confronted Asha after spotting the burns on her arms and is now encouraging her to get help.

"Asha deserves to win a soap award or BAFTA for the way she has acted in this story," praised one Corrie fan on Twitter.

"Incredible in the way it’s been done and it seems so real, I was unaware that skin lightening was even a thing, good job Corrie and amazing actors especially Asha."

"Tanisha is one to watch out for, what an INCREDIBLE actress!" praised another.

Another commented: "This is absolutely heartbreaking and again something I’m sure many suffer with! Brilliantly acted, and right to show this type of story line!"

"Tanisha Gorey is doing incredible with this storyline such a rising little star aww," said another soap viewer.

And another wrote: "I’m so glad that #Corrie are highlighting Asha’s skin lightning story as I myself have tried to lighten my skin as a teen, especially when I was bullied as a teen.

"I just wanna say to people with skin colour complexes, we are all beautiful no matter the colour."

Asha, played since 2009 by Tanisha, is the daughter of corner shop owner Dev and the late Sunita Alahan.

Shortly after she and Aadi were born in January 2016 their mum decided to leave Weatherfield with the twins but they returned in 2009 when Sunita reunited with Dev.

Tragically, in 2013 the twins lost their mum when Sunita was injured in the Rovers Return fire started by her ex lover Karl Munro.

Dev, played by Jimmi Harkishin, has failed to find another true love after Sunita, played by Shobna Gulati, but he found a loyal friend in Mary Taylor, played by Patti Clare, who has cared for him and his children.
