Coronation Street's Steve forced to ask heartbreaking question amid son's illness battle

Coronation Street aired devastating scenes on Wednesday night, in the wake of Oliver Battersby's possible diagnosis.

His worried dad Steve McDonald was left asking a heartbreaking question, as the reality of their situation dawned on him.

The three-year-old has been suffering from seizures over the past few weeks, with doctors suspecting he may have epilepsy.

But Oliver deteriorated, and Monday's episode saw him remain unconscious in intensive care after another serious seizure.

Viewers of the ITV soap recently learned the youngster would be diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, a life limiting illness for which there is currently no cure.

Leanne and Steve were told by doctors that Oliver's condition was likely to be a genetic disease, before confirming mitochondrial disease was being looked into.

On Wednesday, Steve couldn't help but go against Dr Ward's advice and look the condition up online.

He found there was a number of different types and diseases, and even circumstances, surrounding the illness.

Dr Ward encouraged them to wait for the results before trying to decide in their minds what exactly was wrong with Oliver.

But Steve wasn't happy with waiting as more tests were being carried out, and he shouted at the doctor for answers.

It's then that he asked a heartbreaking question, desperate to know the fate of his little boy - a question that left Leanne in pieces.

He asked Dr Ward: "I need to know if my son is going to live or die."

Viewers were distraught for Oliver and his parents, seeing the pain and fear they were experiencing.

It has yet to be confirmed how severe Oliver's condition is, while it's expected to be this week that doctors do confirm he has mitochondrial disease.

Elsewhere, and waiting for news on Oliver was tearing the family apart.

Leanne lashed out at Steve and her partner Nick Tilsley, as he struggled to cope with his stepson's illness.

Elsewhere, Oliver's stepsister Amy Barlow also cracked, before seeking comfort in her grandmother Liz.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm on ITV.
