Corrie's Sharon Bentley returns after 22 years - who is she and what is her secret?

Coronation Street 's Sharon Bentley makes her dramatic return to the soap on Wednesday night, after last being seen in Weatherfield in 1999.

Sharon (Tracie Bennett) is set to give her foster mother Rita (Barbara Knox) a big shock when she rocks up - and here is all you need to keep you up to date with her past.

Sharon was Rita and Len's foster daughter in 1982, and then returned 17 years later to invite Rita to her wedding.

But when she discovered her fiance Ian Bentley had two-timed her with Natalie Barnes, she jilted him at the altar.

Sharon then decided to run The Kabin, which Rita had given to her as a birthday gift, and she clashed with Rita's assistant, Leanne Battersby.

Eventually Sharon took Ian back and they got married - she sold The Kabin back to Rita and left for Bolton - with Rita left utterly furious, and the pair have never spoken since, but Sharon has battled cancer.

The reason for Sharon's return is to tell Rita she has been nominated for a Golden Heart Award, and she hopes to make amends with her, with Rita initially accepting.

But she clashes with her family and especially with Rita's stepdaughter Jenny Connor, and Gemma is suspicious that Sharon actually has other, darker intentions for coming back.

Why is Sharon really back, is she hiding something? And can she and Rita bury the hatchet after all?

Tracie said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to the cobbles. It is a dream come true for me, I had such an amazing time there and I am looking forward to working with Barbara again and getting my teeth into the storylines they have planned for Sharon.

"I was first approached about coming back about 18 months ago, I was keen and excited to see what was in store but my work schedule and then the pandemic has meant that it has taken till now for it all to come together.

"I am so pleased that I can finally tell everyone as it has been hard trying to keep the secret."

* Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
