Coronation Street's Sally Dynevor struggled filming 'horrendous' domestic abuse storyline

Coronation Street actress Sally Dynevor has admitted that she struggled filming "horrendous" scenes during her domestic abuse storyline in the 90s.

Sally plays Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap, who has begun to suspect that her father-in-law Geoff has not been telling the truth about what has really been happening behind closed doors with wife Yasmeen.

However, fans may recall that Sally was also the victim of domestic abuse with partner Greg Kelly, played by Stephen Billington, in the 90s.

Actress Sally has said that Yasmeen's current situation reminds her of what happened to Sally.

The 57-year-old told Inside Soap: "I remember that it was one of the only storylines I've had where I've been home at night and thought, 'today was horrendous'.

"It's hard going through something like that, spending a day being abused and beaten up, and then coming home to live a normal life."

She said that Shelley King, who plays Yasmeen, likely felt a similar way when shooting her scenes with Ian Bartholomew.

Sally said: "I'm sure Shelley is feeling that too, as it takes a lot out of you when someone is screaming at you all day - even when you know it's not real.

"It breaks your heart to know that there are so many people going through it."

Actor Ian has previously said that he found it difficult playing his character and that his kids no longer watched his scenes on TV.

He told Lorraine Kelly on Good Morning Britain in April: "Geoff is a very nasty person, I don't like him at all, if it's any consolation."

"It's been difficult because I'm not the sort of person I would want to be or want to be around," Ian said, but had been made easier by the trust between himself and actress Shelley.

Speaking about how his children couldn't watch the scenes incolving Geoff and Yasmeen because they were too unpleasant, Ian said: "They didn’t want to watch, they saw me lock Yasmeen into the box, the ‘magic box’ and they said, ‘No, can’t watch Dad doing that’.

"So they haven’t watched since then and I can’t blame them. It must be quite difficult for them to watch their dad being unpleasant the whole time."
