Coronation Street's Rita Sullivan 'left for dead' in devastating Christmas plot

Coronation Street is said to be lining up a heartbreaking new Christmas storyline, that will see Rita Sullivan "left for dead".

The plot will apparently focus on lonely OAPs, and will see Rita, played by actress Barbara Knox, suffer an accident during he festive episodes.

It's claimed Rita will take a fall at home while attempting to decorate her house for Christmas, putting up some fairy lights on her Christmas tree.

But Rita will end up falling with her Christmas tree landing on top of her, and it's said she will be left trapped beneath it for several days waiting for help.

Reflecting on loneliness and the importance of checking up on elderly loved ones and neighbours, the plot will see Rita waiting for help with no one aware of what has happened to her.

“She ends up putting the lights on herself but when switching them on she trips and falls, pulling the tree on top of her."

They added: "Spending Christmas alone is a scenario many OAPs may find themselves in a few weeks."

The character was currently a huge support to her close friend Gemma Winter, who is like a daughter to her, after she learned she was expecting quadruplets.

She gave birth this week after dramatic scenes saw her and partner Chesney Brown stuck in a cable car.

After going into labour, Gemma gave birth to her first baby in the car before being rushed to hospital.

Sam Aston and Dolly-Rose Campbell who play the couple recently confessed they were a little worried when they learned how many babies would be on set.

It was initially said that eight babies would be cast to play the quads so that each baby had a double, but Sam confirmed there is five of them playing the roles.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
