Coronation Street's Julia Goulding back as Shona just 3 months after giving birth

Coronation Street star Julia Goulding made her return to the famous cobbles this week just three months after giving birth to son Franklin Wolf.

The soap star who plays Shona Platt was pictured on the Manchester set with a huge smile on her face as she cradled her bundle of joy, who she dressed in a snuggly grey wool hoodie.

Julia kept him held close to her chest and covered him up to keep warm inside a large red puffa coat, provided by ITV studios.

Fans have been anticipating the return of Shona, who has been at the heart of some of the show's most gripping storylines in recent months.

The character was shot on Christmas Day and ended up in a coma.

She eventually woke up but didn't recognise husband David (played by Jack P Shepherd) or the rest of the family, and was moved to a specialist unit in Leeds to recover.

The planned break from screens allowed Julia to take maternity leave in November, just a few weeks before she gave birth.

Show's bosses made sure to announce her big return with a post to their official Instagram account.

The post read: "Guess who was back filming with us this week? We've missed you @juliagoulding #SaturdaySneakPeek #Corrie #BehindTheScenes."

The actress enthusiastically jumped into view in the clip as she spoke to the camera, saying: "Hi everyone, you may be wondering why I am wearing my Coronation Street warm coat - it's because Shona's back!"

Fans went wild for the announcement and flooded the comments with their excitement.

"Wow with a three month old baby! Good on her, and she looks amazing!" wrote one.

"YES!!!! love @juliagoulding ... Great actor and character," wrote another.

While a third penned: "Aw brilliant! Missing Shona."

"YES!!!! love @juliagoulding ... Great actor and character," commented a third.

Back in January, Julia was forced to deny that she had had cosmetic work done, when during emotional scenes of the show some viewers took to Twitter claiming that her lips looked fuller than usual.

"Has Shona had her lips done especially for her hospital bed scenes? #corrie @itvcorrie," one fan wanted to know.

Another viewer joked: "Have the NHS started a new offer? Buy one coma, get lip fillers free. #corrie #shona #duckface."

As the tweets continued, Julia told her followers: "For those of you wondering about Shona’s (my) lips, I’ve NOT had lip fillers done or cosmetic enhancements, I did however have a giant cold sore when filming these scenes!"

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
