Coronation Street's James' sexuality storyline will get 'darker' as he faces homophobia

James Bailey's sexuality storyline will get 'darker' as he faces homophobia on Coronation Street .

Corrie star Lorna Laidlaw has admitted viewers have only seen 'the tip of the iceberg' as certain people's perceptions of James change after he comes out.

On Wednesday's episodes, James opened up to his dad Ed and told him he was gay after hiding his sexuality for years.

After initially seeming accepting, Ed lashed out at James' boyfriend Danny with a vile comment about "corrupting" his son and later told wife Aggie that he was "disgusted" by him.

Lorna, who plays Aggie, explained that viewers will go on a dark journey with James.

She told Digital Spy : "These episodes were just the tip of the iceberg and it's a journey. All of us have to go along with this journey and it will get darker for this child.

"To think how happy and lovely he was at the beginning of this and we'll be exploring how him saying 'I am gay' can change some people's perceptions of him. We go on that journey with him."

Lorna added that Aggie "is really struggling" with her family being at odds but her loyalties lie with her son.

The Corrie actress admitted filming the emotional scenes was intense.

She added: "It was awful! Really difficult. I'm quite an emotional person. If you feel it and you're in that moment, hell or high water, no matter how many times you filmed it, you feel it because you're absolutely in that moment. You feel the agony of what this lad is going through."

Corrie fans were disgusted on Wednesday night when Ed furiously lashed out at pal Danny for "corrupting" his son.

When Danny labelled him a "homophobe and a hypocrite", Ed yelled: "I'm telling you, keep your sick, filthy paws off my boy."

Viewers were even more horrified when Ed later admitted to his wife that he was "disgusted" by his son, prompting her compare him to "racists who shove hate mail through their door".

Coronation Street's James Bailey actor Nathan Graham discussed his storyline (ITV)

Speaking on Thursday morning's Lorraine, actor Nathan Graham spoke out about filming the intense scenes.

Nathan, who plays footballer James, explained the importance of showing Ed's "struggle" with his son's sexuality.

He told host Christine Lampard: "Ed did look like he had accepted it but it is truthful to show that side of it, that it still isn't accepted in maybe some families.

"To show that, him struggling with it, is a good thing to highlight and point out."

Nathan also spoke of his footballer character being a victim of both homophobia and racism.

The Corrie star added: "I feel we are approaching and tackling two things.

"There's the racism element, and there's the homophobia as well so for James he has both to deal with at the same time.

"To highlight both issues is really important. Discrimination is discrimination. Neither one is more important than the other."
