Coronation Street's Bev Callard: 'It's great being 60 — I'm content at last'

Coronation Street star Beverley Callard is finally content with life after ­reaching her sixties.

The 62-year-old actress, who has spent time in a psychiatric hospital, said: “I was dubious about turning 60.

“But it has brought a feeling of contentedness. I’m the most confident I’ve been in years.

“For the first time in a long time, I don’t care what people think. I’m living my life for me and I’m having a great time.”

Beverley, who is celebrating 30 years playing Liz McDonald on the ITV soap, describes how a nervous breakdown in 2009 robbed her of her confidence.

The mum of two children and three stepchildren said: “I’ve always said depression is the curse of the strong.

“I tried to hide it for so long and it ended up in a breakdown.”

Beverley struggled after her pub business went bust, leaving her with a £150,000 debt.

Beverley, who married fourth husband Jon McEwan in 2010, now plans to renew her vows.

She said: “We got very swept up in the big, showbiz bash. We want to do something smaller.”

Recently Bev announced she will be joining a stage show called Thunder Girls, which is based on a novel .

She said: "This is amazing. As an actor you get offered scripts all the time.

"But because I’m contracted to Coronation Street , which I love, it's very difficult to, even if you love a script, it's hard to say 'yes'.

"Everything has to be juggled. This script came to me and I said to my producer at Coronation Street 'I can’t say no to this, please let me do this'.

"It's a brand new play with four grown up women in it of an age."
