Coronation Street's Adam Barlow affair plot: Why is Lydia after him, and is he leaving?

Coronation Street viewers have been left desperate for answers, after it was confirmed newcomer Lydia Chambers was behind the recent torment aimed at Adam Barlow on the ITV soap.

This all escalated in recent scenes, when Lydia began to tear apart Adam's life, framing him over an affair.

With hotel visits, dodgy bank statements and a secret phone, Lydia stitched Adam up to his wife Sarah Platt, and no one believes his claims of innocence.

Lydia has told Adam all about her plan to bring him down, while she hasn't explained why exactly she is doing it - other than to "dismantle his life".

With it all linked to their past, here's everything we know so far...

Who is Lydia, and how does she know Adam?

Coronation Street viewers have been left desperate for answers, after it was confirmed newcomer Lydia Chambers was behind the recent torment aimed at Adam Barlow (ITV)

Lydia Chambers was introduced as working for a client of the factory, where Sarah works.

She soon became friends with Sarah and began working at the factory, after the loss of her previous job.

It was soon revealed the pair had dated when they were at university together, and Adam seems to recall their romance being quite brief.

From two months to six, he isn't entirely sure to be honest - while Lydia has suggested there was much more to their romance than he has claimed.

Lydia has yet to confirm her exact reasons for targeting him, but did confirm something happened in their past.

In a recent episode Adam was in shock, admitting he had no idea what he did to her all those years ago, but Lydia remained coy as she urged him to cast his mind back.

Lydia said: "Do you really need me to explain?" before making it clear she was in no way interested in actually having a fling with him.

As he demanded answers, she said: "You know what this is Adam? Payback. Everything you deserve and more," telling him: "Cast your mind back Mr Memory."

Adam protested that he had no idea what she was going on about, sure they were not "serious" and had only dated for a matter of months.

Lydia looked furious with this claim, before vowing to destroy him - suggesting it's what he'd done to her over a decade ago.

She asked: "Is that really all you think happened?" as if there was more that he wasn't confessing to, which he clearly didn't know about.

He said: "Tell me what went down then," and she said: "You messed up my life, you dismantled me bit by bit."

Telling him it was too late to say sorry, she vowed: "I'll tell you what I am gonna do, Adam. I'm gonna dismantle your life like you dismantled mine, piece by piece and there is nothing you can do about it."

Is Adam Barlow leaving Corrie?

Viewers have been questioning if he will leave due to the dramatic storyline (ITV)

Viewers have been questioning if he will leave due to the dramatic storyline, while this has not been addressed.

Actor Sam did recently confess he had considered his future with the ITV soap amid the new storyline.

He explained: "Sometimes you pick up a script and I feel like I am doing that same scene as I did 12 months ago.

"At first, I was a little bit troubled by it because we did a storyline when Adam had a fling with Carla. I don’t know if it’s too soon for more of that?

Sarah doesn't believe Adam (ITV)

"Tina and I have gone from working together and a lot of harmony to suddenly being at each other’s throats. So it’s been really tough to do that again so soon.

"Sometimes it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it has been five and a half months that we’ve been in this storyline.

"I definitely feel like it needs to recalibrate. Who is this character I’m playing now? With the confusion Adam is feeling, I’m kind of feeling that myself as an actor."
