Coronation Street pay homage to iconic Ena Sharples with Kelly Neelan scene

Coronation Street paid tribute to iconic soap character Ena Sharples during Wednesday night's episode.

The latest instalment of the ITV soap began with Kelly Neelan stood on a balcony as she looked down at the street below and contemplated her future.

Kieron's voiceover could be heard as Kelly recalled a recent conversation she'd had with him regarding Gary Windass.

It has now been revealed that the opening scene was a replication of an image of Coronation Street's Ena from back in 1968.

Ena, played by actress Violet Carson, appeared in the first ever episode of the ITV soap which was broadcast on December 9, 1960, and stayed with the show until April 2, 1980.

Ena was the widowed caretaker of the Glad Tidings Mission Hall and spent much of her time criticising the activities and loose morals of the street's other residents.

One of the main characters during the 1960s, she was featured less regularly in the 1970s due to the declining health of Violet, and was written out in 1980.

Taking to Twitter, presenter and TV critic Michael Adams shared the striking black and white image of Ena stood on a balcony overlooking the street below.

He captioned the post: "Bit of behind the scenes #Corrie for you: tonight’s opening shot of Kelly was specifically written in the script to pay homage to this shot of Violet Carson, in character as Ena Sharples from 1968."

Corrie fans were quick to respond to the tweet, with one person writing: "I've always wanted to know- what's the story behind this shot. I absolutely ADORE it. It gives me tingles every time I see it."

Another said: "Such a beautiful shot- would make an awesome dvd cover!"

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
